The idea of a leadership institute was conceived at the time Bethlehem University awarded an honorary doctorate to Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. Subsequently, various friends of the University supported this idea and helped to secure funding to develop a leadership institute in the Cardinal’s honor. A think tank comprised of Palestinian and expatriate academics and NGO leaders was formed to develop the concept of the Cardinal Martini Leadership Institute consistent with the mission of Bethlehem University and responsive to the needs of the Palestinian people.

Leadership forum of two days was held for the second time at the intercontinental of Jericho on 6th and the 7th of November 2010. The forum targeted the faculty deans, chairpersons, and the Executive council members of Bethlehem University.

In June 2010, the Cardinal Martini leadership Institute (CMLI) started a course titled: Leadership in the church in Haifa, for Catholic Lays from Haifa- region of Galilee.

The Cardinal Martini Leadership Institute in cooperation with Saint Joseph School established a new course entitled communication and Leadership for women. This course is prepared for the student's mothers from Bethlehem, Beit Sahour and Beit Jala.

In September 2010, at the request of the participants, the Cardinal Martini Leadership Institute started its fourth series of the "Women and Leadership" workshop with a new number of participants (35) at Bethlehem University.
